Commencement Speech

Dr. Tomarken is the Commissioner of Health for the Suffolk County Department of Health Services.  Before he held this role, he was a Senior Fellow in International Healthcare Management at Yale University/William J. Clinton Foundation. Over the last few years, Dr. Tomarken developed an HIV/AIDS initiative in Liberia and coordinated the multi-million dollar rebuilding of the 500-bed John F. Kennedy Medical Center hospital in West Africa.

Prior to joining the Clinton Foundation in 2007, Dr. Tomarken served at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. He has also held positions with the University of Toronto Hospital and has considerable experience as medical director for insurance plans, including Cigna Healthcare of Ohio, Independence Blue Cross, and Keystone Health Plan of Central Pennsylvania.

Dr. Tomarken earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Los Angeles, and a Doctor of Medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He also holds Master of Social Welfare, Master of Business Administration, and Master of Public Health degrees.
