The Program in Public Health at Stony Brook Medicine is pleased to offer an elective course that introduces students to the challenges that public health professionals face when managing disaster situations. Students will learn the essential skills needed to prepare for, to respond to, and to manage disaster events such as hurricanes, viral pandemics, and terrorist incidents. Students engage in classroom discussions and exercises that simulate disaster situations. The course incorporates practical elements such as case studies of historical disasters, critiqued by public health experts, and interactive exercises that foster interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing simulated challenges. The course instructors share their knowledge and experience in managing disaster situations at the local, state and federal levels and how public health plays a vital role in mitigating human injury, illness and suffering during disasters.
