December 5, 2014: Congratulations to PPH alumnus Aleef Rahman (2011). He presented two projects at The American Society of Nephrology Kidney Week Conference in Philadelphia. One presentation was titled: Impact of Nursing Home Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis on Emergency Department (ED) and Hospital Admissions in the Northeast by Aleef M. Rahman, MPH, MBA, MSc, CPH; George N. Coritsidis, MD; Marie France R. DeLeon, MD; Jasjit Singh, MD; Carol Lyden, RN, BSN, MS, CNN; Jaya Bhargava, PhD; Roshan A. Patel, MD. The other presentation was: The Impact of a Renal Intensivist in a Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit (STICU) by Roshan A. Patel, MD; Aleef M. Rahman, MPH, MBA, MSc, CPH; Viral G. Gandhi, MD; Omar Mudallal, MD; George N. Coritsidis, MD. 

The Grant was granted to assess risk factors, injury patterns & outcomes to reduce the number of elderly pedestrians injured and killed by motor-vehicles in NYC through a multifaceted, high-technology based and data-driven intervention. Specifically, as the Principal Investigator, Aleef will be studying medication adherence and compliance in this geriatric population who often suffer from trauma. The project is titled Zero Struck Pedestrians and will be carried out at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and it's affiliate HHC Hospital in New York City.



October 16, 2014: PPH Faculty member Dr. Andrew Flescher's article was published by Newsday on Tuesday, October 14. It deals with the right to die. Click here to read the full article. 




November 6, 2014: PPH faculty member Dr. Lauren Hale is featured in the latest issue of Sleep Review. Her article deals with sleep stratification. Click here to access a digital copy of the journal. 


August 29, 2014: MPH core faculty member Sean Clouston, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Preventive Medicine's new paper titled Social Inequalities in Suicide: The Role of Selective Seratonin Reuptake Inhibitors is being published in The American Journal of Epidemiology. The main point of this study was to examine whether the wide scale distribution of Selective Seratonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants, which are believed to treat depression and have increasingly been associated with reductions in the risk of suicide, has resulted in socioeconomic inequalities in suicide. October 02, 2014: Congratulations to PPH alumnus Fabio Lima (2012) and current student Alessandra Trevisan, their presentation at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) 2014 conference was selected as one out of eighteen moderated posters (out of 750). They also won Top 50 Poster Award. Their presentation is now published on the Journal of American College of Cardiology's website


September 30, 2014: Congratulations to Sadaf Ghori, MPH Candidate, for a job well done presenting "Opinions of Women on Emergency Contraception in Chile" at the Annual Meeting of the International Consortium on Emergency Contraception (ICEC) in New York City on September 26, 2014 


August 13, 2014: PPH alumni Fabio Lima (2012), and Tzyy Yun Michael Yen (2013) will be doing an oral presentation on "Temporal Trends in Outcomes for Adults Hospitalized with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Exacerbations" at CHEST 2014. August 13, 2014: PPH Alumni Fabio Lima (2012) and Puja B. Parikh (2012) will be doing a presentation at the American Heart Association's 2014 Scientific Sessions conference in Chicago, Il. The presentation is titled "Comparison of Clinical Characteristics and Adverse Outcomes in Pregnant Women with Cardiomyopathy Subtypes at the Time of Delivery in the US: 2006-2010"  Author list: Fabio V. August 13, 2014: PPH Alumnus Fabio Lima (2012) and current student Alessandra Trevisan (admitted on 2013) are presenting at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) conference. The research is titled " Bivalirudin Versus Unfractionated Heparin in Percutaneous Coronary Intervention for Stable Angina: A Randomized Clinical Trial (STATUS-PCI)" Author list: Fabio V. Lima, Luis Gruberg, Usman Aslam, Kydanis Clase, Melissa Ramgadoo, Alessandra Trevisan, Allen Jeremias (Principal Investigator). The TCT conference is the world's largest educational meeting specializing in interventional cardiovascular medicine. It will take place in Washington D.C. on September 13th. Link to conference   


June 18, 2014: PPH Faculty member Tia Palermo, Ph.D. and her colleagues published an open letter on myths and challenges associated with addressing sexual violence in conflict. The letter was created by members of the Missing Peace Young Scholars Network and it is addressed to UK Foreign Secretary William Hague and UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie. May 27, 2014: PPH Alumnus conducts Hepatitis B assessment and education outreach trip in Dharamsala, India. Congratulations to Trinley Palmo, MPH '12, Public Health Program Officer with the Department of Health (DoH) of Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) in Dharamsala, India who recently conducted a Hepatitis B assessment and education outreach trip in May 2013 among Tibetan nomads in Ladakh. 


May 27, 2014: PPH Faculty member chosen as panelist for the event hosted by the US Institute of Peace in Washington, DC on May 23, 2014. Many congratualtions to Dr. Tia Palermo (Program in Public Health) who was a panelist in the event entitled "Ending Sexual Violence in Conflict: Missing Peace Young Scholars' Contribution to the UK Global Summit" hosted by the US Institute of Peace in Washington, DC on May 23, 2014. May 27, 2014: PPH Faculty Member and MPH Alumni publish paper in the journal contraception. Congratulations to Margaret Pichardo (MPH '13), Sherani Jagroep (MPH '13), Dr. Tia Palermo (Program in Public Health), and their colleagues in Buenos Aires, Argentina, who have published a study on the use of intrauterine devices (IUDs) as emergency contraception in the journal Contraception. March 18, 2014: PPH Staff member in news for her work in setting up a food pantry on campus. Many Congratulations to Casey McGloin for her tireless and invaluable contribution in setting up a student pantry on campus. Her efforts have gained her well deserved recognition in the news. Not only is this an important contribution for students on campus who wish to access food in the time of quick need but it is also a healthier option. Greak work Casey!!


March 12, 2014: PPH Faculty featured in the Health Section of ABC News Story. Congratulations to our very own Dr. Hale for being featured in the Health Section of an ABC News article. The article speaks about the association between sleep deprivation and eating habits, and is an important topic of discussion for all of us in this current age who avoid both these essential habits. March 05, 2014: MPH Alum wins 2nd place at the 16th Annual Dr. J. Emilio Carrillo Award For Excellence in Research. Congratulations to Margaret Pichardo, MPH (2013) for winning 2nd Place in the 16th Annual Dr. J. Emilio Carrillo Award For Excellence in Research at the 41st Annual LMSA-NE Conference: “Abriendo La PUERTA: Latinos Promoting Unity, Education, & Rights Through Awareness!” at Weill Cornell Medical College on Mar 1, 2014. She presented results from the study “Patient acceptability of the Intrauterine Device (IUD) as Emergency Contraception: Evidence from Buenos Aires, Argentina,” which she conducted in collaboration with fellow PPH alum, Sherani Jagroep, MPH (2013), under  the direction of Dr. Tia Palermo in the Program in Public Health and Dr. Lia Arribas at Rivadavia Hospital, Buenos Aires.

The title of the research is: Patient acceptability of the Intrauterine Device (IUD) as Emergency Contraception: Evidence from Buenos Aires, Argentina.”


February 7, 2014: PPH Faculty member Andrew Flescher's book receives the PROSE award.
