Professor Benz has over thirty years of healthcare leadership service. His experience traverses a wide range of healthcare sectors including hospitals, physician practices, insurance companies, and consulting organizations. The primary focus of his career has been on information technology, but he also has led teams in healthcare operations and patient access. In his leadership roles at several Long Island community hospitals, Catholic Health, and the Clinical Practice Management Plan at Stony Brook, Professor Benz has led many initiatives. Some of these endeavors include the selection and implementation of EHRs, budgeting for technology strategies and leading IT professionals as well as strategic planning and governance for information technology infrastructure. Most recently, his focus has been on large healthcare information system deployments and the technological needs of ambulatory practices. Professor Benz created a mentorship program for health informatics students in which the students are allowed to learn about the healthcare system from leaders of the industry.
