What advice would you give to a new student in the program?

The
Program in Public Health at Stony Brook is a very
close-knit community. Everyone knows each other. Using this to your advantage
and networking with your peers and with top public health faculty is integral to
setting oneself up as a future public health professional. Additionally, most
faculty members are the top experts in their respective fields of public health
research. This gives new students the opportunity to engage in public health
research that can later be used for elective options and even the final public
health practicum. I would recommend engaging in more than one public
health project with more than one faculty member. Not only does this give you
more opportunities to apply public health concepts practically, but also helps
build a comprehensive professional portfolio that can be presented in the futire to potential employers.

What do you enjoy most about the program?

One
of my favorite parts of the Program in Public Health at Stony Brook
is the diversity of the student body. Coming from a very
multicultural atmosphere in Queens, New York, I feel as if I am still at home. To
my surprise, every person in my class came a different walk of life,
making in-class interactions very interesting. Even the way I perceived and prioritized public health issues changed as I learned more about my peers’
backgrounds. Understanding each others’ cultures and reasons for studying
public health really aided in clarifying public health issues not only here in
the United States but also globally.
